Newzroom Afrika interviewed ASC Public Health and Food Safety Consultants to discuss the importance of Spaza shop regulation in South Africa.
Mthokozisi Nkosi, a food safety expert, shed light on the urgent issue of food poisoning and how it has become a critical matter in the lives of South Africans. He referenced troubling statistics from Gauteng, where over 200 cases of foodborne illness have been reported in children.
Mthokozisi emphasised that food safety incidents are not limited to small, informal traders. He pointed to a similar case in Mdantsane Township, Eastern Cape, linked to a large retailer, reinforcing that food safety concerns span both large and small business owners.
Reflecting on the 2018 listeriosis outbreak, Nkosi noted that the government had mandated that all food traders, large and small, undergo proper training in food safety practices.
