Registration Requirements for Spaza Shops, Vendors and Informal Traders in South Africa

PLEASE NOTE: All Spaza Shops, vendors, and informal traders must register with the municipality from 15 November 2024 until 13 December 2024. The deadline is 13 December 2024.

Below are the documents applicants must take to their local authority/municipality where the business is situated.

A) Formal Food Handling Premises (Including Spaza Shops)

Required Documents:

  • Zoning Certificate / Special Consent Approval – (Obtained from Town Planning)
  • Waste Removal Services – (Municipal Account Bill or Private Services Provider’s Contract / Invoice)
  • Pest Control Services – (Service Provider’s contract / Invoice) provide treatment report.
  • Food Safety Training Certificate
  • Fire Safety Certificate – (Gas users only)

B) Informal Food Handling Premises (Hawkers)

Required Documents:

  • CBD Permit
  • ID Photos x2
  • Food Safety Training Certificate
  • Gas Installation Certificate – (Gas users only)

C) Re-issue of a Certificate of Acceptability

Required Documents:

  • Formal Food Handling Premises (Including Spaza Shops) – Same as above.
  • Informal Food Handling Premises (Hawkers) – Same as above.
